Ancient China played a version called Cuju which involved kicking a leather ball stuffed with feathers through a small net opening. Some articles mention that soldiers also played this during their military training to improve coordination and fitness.

Ancient Greece’s version was called Episkyros which featured two teams of equal numbers usually 12 or 14 players. The goal (hah!) was to get the ball past a white goal line (known as the skuros) that the opposing team was working to defend. They say you used your hands as well so it incorporated elements of what we know today as football and rugby.

Now the Ancient Romans had a version which was said to be a tad more aggressive known as Harpastum which emphasized physical contact and the goal of keeping possession of a small, hard ball on one’s own side of the field. (Appreciation side bar for Gianluigi Buffon tied with Tim Howard for my favorite goalkeeper!)

📢Coming in to the game 📢 (Announcer voice) are the Ancient Aztecs who played their version called ōllamaliztli, a game played on courts, usually placed near a temple to emphasize the sacred meaning of the game. The use of hands was prohibited, and the ball that was usually used was made of natural rubber.

Fast forward to 19th Century England when soccer took hold into the modern game we play today. Schools and clubs codified standardized rules—eventually leading to the creation of association football in 1863.

In 1492, there was no Haiti.

There was no Dominican Republic.

There was only one island. Inhabited by the Native Tainos - the island was divided into five main chiefdoms (cacicazgos), each ruled by a cacique (paramount chief) - another article in an of itself will be dedicated to this! :)

Today, one side attracts millions of tourists every year.

The other has endured political instability, foreign intervention, and economic hardship.

How did two nations sharing the same island end up with such different trajectories?

The answer begins with sugar, slavery, revolution, and a debt so large it crippled a country for more than a century.

Over the next three centuries, Hispaniola would become a laboratory of colonialism, slavery, and empire. The consequences of that era continue to shape the destinies of the two nations that now share the island.

• 1490s–1500s – Spanish settlements are established and early colonial agriculture begins.

• c. 1515–1516 – First sugar mills (ingenios) appear, marking the start of plantation sugar production.

• 1520s–1540s – Sugar expands around Santo Domingo; enslaved Africans increasingly replace the declining Taíno population.

• Mid-1500s – Hispaniola becomes one of the earliest sugar-producing colonies in the Americas.

Sugar helped transform Hispaniola into one of the first plantation societies in the Americas, introducing:

• large-scale African slavery

• export-driven agriculture

• rigid racial and social hierarchies

• concentrated land ownership

The first major divergence began with European neglect - over time, Spain shifted its imperial focus to richer opportunities in Mexico and South America, and Hispaniola’s sugar industry declined.

(It later reemerged dramatically in the western part of the island under France. By the late 1700s, Saint-Domingue[what is now Haiti] had become the world’s most profitable sugar colony, producing roughly 40% of Europe’s sugar.)

As Spanish influence weakened in the western portion of the island, French settlers gradually established a foothold there. In 1697, Spain formally ceded the western third of Hispaniola to France through the Treaty of Ryswick.

The island was now divided between two colonial powers.

Under French rule, the western colony—known as Saint-Domingue—became one of the wealthiest colonies in the world. Vast sugar and coffee plantations generated enormous profits for France. By the late eighteenth century, Saint-Domingue produced nearly half of the world’s coffee and a significant share of its sugar exports.

At this point, Haiti was arguably the richest colony in the world.

Not one of the richest.

The richest.

Its sugar and coffee plantations generated enormous wealth for France.

Yet within a generation, that wealth would disappear.

The colony’s prosperity, however, rested upon one of the most brutal slave systems in the Americas.

In 1791, enslaved Africans launched a revolt that would become the Haitian Revolution. After more than a decade of warfare against French, Spanish, and British forces, the revolutionaries emerged victorious. In 1804, Haiti became the first independent Black republic in history and the second independent nation in the Western Hemisphere.

Yet freedom came at a tremendous cost.

Fearing the example Haiti might set for enslaved populations elsewhere, many countries isolated the new republic diplomatically and economically. In 1825, France demanded that Haiti compensate former slaveholders for their lost property as a condition for diplomatic recognition. Facing the threat of military action, Haiti agreed. The resulting debt burden consumed government revenues for generations and diverted resources away from infrastructure, education, and economic development.

Meanwhile, the eastern side of the island followed a different path.

Unlike Saint-Domingue, the Spanish colony never developed a plantation economy on the same scale. Slavery existed, but it was less central to the economy.

How the Dominican Republic Gained Independence from Haiti

In 1822, Haiti, under President Jean-Pierre Boyer, unified the entire island of Hispaniola by taking control of the eastern side. This ended the short-lived independence of Spanish Santo Domingo and created a single Haitian state across the island.

Haitian rule brought major changes, including:

• Abolition of slavery across the island

• Land reform policies and taxation

• Centralized governance from Port-au-Prince

• Military and administrative control over the eastern region

However, many in the eastern part of the island—especially the local Creole elites—resented Haitian rule, particularly over issues of taxation, language, political authority, and cultural identity.

The Break in 1844

On February 27, 1844, a nationalist movement called La Trinitaria, led by Juan Pablo Duarte, launched a revolt in Santo Domingo and declared independence, forming the Dominican Republic.

Key factors that enabled independence:

• Weakening Haitian state power under economic strain

• Growing Dominican nationalist identity

• Support from rural militias in the east

• Strategic coordination by independence leaders in Santo Domingo

After the declaration, Haiti attempted multiple military campaigns to retake the eastern territory, but they ultimately failed to maintain control.

By the mid-1840s, the Dominican Republic had effectively secured its sovereignty.

Neither country enjoyed a smooth journey. Both experienced dictatorships, foreign intervention, political upheaval, and economic challenges. Yet the institutions they inherited, the economic systems established during colonial rule, and their differing relationships with global powers created distinct starting points.

Today, the Dominican Republic attracts millions of tourists annually and has experienced sustained economic growth over recent decades. Haiti continues to grapple with political instability, weak institutions, natural disasters, and the lingering effects of historical exclusion from the global economy.

The contrast between the two countries is often portrayed as a mystery.

In reality, it is a story rooted in history.

The divide between Haiti and the Dominican Republic did not emerge overnight, nor can it be explained by geography alone. It was shaped by colonial policies, the economics of slavery, the consequences of revolution, international intervention, and the unequal burdens imposed after independence.

Two nations share one island.

But they inherited very different pasts—and those pasts continue to shape their futures.
